Nirvana’s “MTV Unplugged” Turns 25

By Armando

DGC

On November 18, 1993, at the height of their popularity, the rock band Nirvana recorded a live acoustic performance at Sony Music Studios in New York City. This was just a few months after their third and final studio album, “In Utero,” topped the charts. This iconic album celebrated its 25th anniversary this week.

Released months after the death of the band’s frontman, Kurt Cobain, “MTV Unplugged in New York” became one of the most acclaimed albums in the band’s discography and is hailed as one of the best live albums of all time.

With its stripped-down set and acoustic format, the MTV performance contrasted with the band’s established grunge image and their typically intense alternative tracks. This surprised and frustrated many who had expected them to play their hits with roaring guitars that day.

However, in the wake of Cobain’s death, the unplugged recording poignantly captured that particular moment in the band’s history. In retrospect, there was an unsettling solemnity that eerily seemed to anticipate the tragedy that would unfold the following year. The crystal chandelier and black candles on stage only added to this ambiance.

Stylistically, this performance showcased a different side of the band, which greatly enriched their legacy. It not only encapsulated Cobain at his artistic zenith but also revealed a vulnerability and intimacy seldom seen in his other performances throughout the band’s career.

Besides “All Apologies” and “Come As You Are,” the album consists of a mix of the band’s lesser-known tracks and covers of songs by David Bowie, Lead Belly, The Vaselines, and Meat Puppets.

The album’s timelessness can be attributed precisely to these reasons.

True to form, the album debuted at number one on the Billboard album charts and later received a 5x platinum certification in the US. Critics lauded the work, and it eventually won the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album.

Julianne Moore Hits The Dance Floor In “Gloria Bell”

By Creative Media Times

A24

Julianne Moore is a disco-dancing divorcée who finds love in the amusing new trailer for “Gloria Bell,” A24’s upcoming romance drama.

“When the world blows up, I hope I go down dancing,” Moore’s titular role says in the trailer. It is at the club where she meets Arnold, played by Turturro, and not long after, things got complicated.

“Gloria Bell” is a remake of director Sebastián Lelio’s own Chilean-Spanish dramady “Gloria.” Chilean actress Paulina García won the Silver Bear for Best Actress for that film at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2013. Lelio himself recently won an academy award for best foreign language film in “A Fantastic Woman.”

Written by Lelio, “Gloria Bell” premiered a few months ago on September 7 at the Toronto International Film Festival and has since received strong reviews.

Fearing a talented cast including Michael Cera, Caren Pistorius, Brad Garrett, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Rita Wilson, Sean Astin and Holland Taylor, the film is set for release on on March 8, 2019.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

Gloria (Julianne Moore) is a free-spirited divorcée who spends her days at a straight-laced office job and her nights on the dance floor, joyfully letting loose at clubs around Los Angeles. After meeting Arnold (John Turturro) on a night out, she finds herself thrust into an unexpected new romance, filled with both the joys of budding love and the complications of dating, identity, and family.

From Academy Award-winning director Sebastián Lelio (A Fantastic Woman, Disobedience) comes a sophisticated romantic comedy that shows love can strike at any time, relationships are never simple, and nothing can get you down as long as you keep dancing.

Lionsgate’s ‘Robin Hood’ Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Out Now via Sony Music Masterworks

Sony Music and global content leader Lionsgate’s release of ROBIN HOOD – ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK with music by Joseph Trapanese (The Greatest Showman, Tron: Legacy, Straight Outta Compton) is out today.

Directed by Otto Bathurst, Robin Hood will make its theatrical debut Friday, November 21, 2018 via Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment label.

Joseph Trapanese commented, “Lionsgate tasked me with creating a fresh, contemporary score for a new generation’s Robin Hood, and I’m incredibly excited to share it with you. Director Otto Bathurst invited me to bring synthetic sound, energetic percussion, and aggressive orchestration to his modern re-telling of this timeless story, the result of which is a classic tale told like none other.”

“We were very committed to making a version of the Robin Hood story that felt contemporary to a modern audience. All the themes of the classic tale run rampant through the 21st century, so our ambition was that the film would resonate with today’s audience. The score was a huge tool in trying to achieve it,” remarked director Otto Bathurst. “In the same way that the design, costume, set pieces and style of the movie were specifically shaped to ensure that the film didn’t feel old-fashioned, we wanted the music to do the same, whilst delivering the scale, fun, and energy of the movie. That’s a tough brief for a composer and Joe really delivered.”

Mariah Carey’s “Glitter” Soundtrack Tops iTunes 17 Years After Its Release

By Creative Media Times

Virgin Records

Through the magic of online fan campaign, #JusticeforGlitter, Mariah Carey’s 2001 soundtrack album “Glitter” re-emerged into the charts, eventually topping iTunes album chart on Thursday, November 15, the eve of release of her latest studio album “Caution.”

“Not sure what’s happening but I love it! The lambily is amazing at getting #JusticeForGlitter,” Carey commented about the strange rise of the album at the charts.

Released for the film of the same name, the album was inspired by the 1980s disco era and was a huge departure for Carey in terms of style, featuring other artists such as Ludacris, Busta Rhymes, Ja Rule, Eric Benét and Fabolous. However, the album was critically panned upon release and became one of Carey’s least successful albums.

The album was originally released on an unfortunate date of September 11, 2001. The film, released a week after, received poor reviews and failed to get traction at the box-office.

The timing could not have been more perfect for Carey. Her upcoming fifteenth studio “Caution” is slated for release on Friday, November 15, 2018. Carey has also recently been nominated for the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
