Celebrate 30 Years of Star Trek: The Next Generation with New Book Critiquing Its Alien Lifeforms

A Field Guide to the Aliens of Star Trek: The Next Generation
By Joshua Chapman, an 11-Year-Old Boy in 1991, Available September 12

Grab a cup of tea (Earl Grey, hot) and enjoy a good read in your command chair. In honor of Star Trek: TNG’s 30th anniversary this September, Devastator Press – the only all-humor press in America – is releasing A Field Guide to the Aliens of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The guide is an informative, exhaustive, and surprisingly personal ranking of every alien lifeform in the series and the TNG films, as written by a boy in the ’90s.

The book collects a series of popular handmade zines attributed to “Joshua Chapman,” thousands of which sold in bookstores across the country. Chapman allegedly began the zines as a class project when he was 11-years-old and the hit sci-fi series was still on the air. He continued rating aliens through his awkward teen years. The book was edited and compiled by Zachary Auburn, author of the bestselling satire How to Talk to Your Cat About Gun Safety.

“The Batman” Potentially A Stand-Alone Movie

By Creative Media Times

WB

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s news regarding a stand-alone Joker origin movie comes another revelation: Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” will also not be a part of DC Extended Universe, this according to his recent interview.

“When they approached me, what they said was: ‘look, it’s a standalone, this isn’t part of the extended universe,” Reeves said during Hollywood Reporters Kim Masters on her podcast, The Business.

Speculation regarding The Batman’s production have been going on for awhile now ever since star Ben Afflect stepped down from directorial duties citing an unmanageable workload early this year.

But that is all it is right now, speculation. It is entirely possible that WB’s DCEU slate could change depending on the performance of this November’s Justice League, especially given Wonder Woman’s recent success. At this point, there is no question that The Batman is moving forward, at least based on WB/DC’s DCEU lineup announced last month at San Diego Comic-Con.

One thing we’re sure of is Reeve’s enthusiasm to make his own Batman film, most likely in the same vein as Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight trilogy.
“I have a vision for a way to do something with that character that feels like it resonates with me personally, and a perspective that can grow out into other things.”

By Creative Media Times

New Line Cinema / Warner Bros.

The Conjuring series continues to make a killing at the boxoffice. After “Annabelle: Creation” took in more than $110 million this week, the horror film franchise from New Line Cinema, a division of Warner Bros. Pictures, has now surpassed the $1 billion at the global boxoffice.

“This year marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of New Line, and without question, the horror genre has always been an integral and important part of the company’s DNA.” stated Toby Emmerich, President and Chief Content Officer, Warner Bros. Pictures Group. “While the genre has certainly evolved over the decades, watching the critical and commercial success of the ‘Conjuring’ universe has been truly spectacular and I am incredibly proud of all the talented people involved in making this happen.”

The series began with the low-budgeted The Conjuring in 2013. Directed by James Wan the film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $318 million worldwide. But New Line Cinema knew they have a hit prior to the films releases: after positive reception from test screenings, the company started development of a sequel The Conjuring 2, and then later of Annabelle, a spin-off based on the origins of the doll seen in first film.

Another spinoff, “The Nun,” is currently in post-production. Based on the “Demon Nun” character Valak from The Conjuring 2, The Nun and is scheduled for release next summer July 13, 2018.

“Annabelle: Creation” stars Stephanie Sigmanm Talitha Bateman, Anthony LaPaglia and Miranda Otto, and directed by David F. Sandberg (“Lights Out”) from a screenplay by Gary Dauberman, who also wrote the first Annabelle film.

Lucasfilm Developing Star Wars’ Obi-Wan Kenobi Film

By Creative Media Times

Lucasfilm Ltd.

Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi might be getting his very own movie, this according to The Hollywood Reporter. English director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours, The Reader) is in “early talks” to helm the film.

A standalone Obi-Wan film would make it the third in the “Star Wars Anthology” series, which are films separate from the main episodic saga. The first in this series is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, released last December, while an Untitled Han Solo film is in production and will be released on May 25, 2018.

The iconic Obi-Wan character has been played by Alec Guinness during the original trilogy, while Ewan McGregor played the younger version in the prequel trilogy. Alec Guinness was nominated for best supporting actor at the Oscars in 1978 for his portrayal of Obi-wan, making him the only actor in the Star Wars franchise to ever receive an acting nomination.

Needless to say, Obi-wan is one of the most important and popular figures in Star Wars lore. In 2003, the character placed 37th in the American Film Institute’s list of greatest movie hero of all time.

McGregor has stated repeatedly his interest in returning to the role should he be approached by Lucasfilm. “Listen, I have been asked about it a lot, to the point where it looks a bit like I’m sort of touting for work. I’ve been very open to say I’d be happy to do it, if they want to do it,” said McGregor.

It looks like that just might come true!

Saoirse Ronan as Mary, Queen of Scots: First Look

By Creative Media Times

Focus Features

As filming began for the historical drama Mary Queen Of Scots, we have the first look at Saoirse Ronan’s title character and she looks as regal as ever. Ronan stars in the film opposite Margot Robbie as Elizabeth I.

Based on John Guy’s acclaimed biography My Heart is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots, the film artistic director Josie Rourke’s directorial debut. Academy Award nominee Beau Willimon (The Ides of March) wrote the screenplay adaptation. The film explores the early life of charismatic Mary Stuart, who was Queen of France at age 16 and widowed a couple of years later by 18.

Ronan and Robbie are joined by a fantastic cast including rising stars Jack Lowden who appeared in this summer’s Dunkirk (plus I’m looking forward to his Morrissey film England is Mine), Joe Alwyn and Martin Compston. Brendan Coyle, David Tennant, and Guy Pearce are also featured.

“We are privileged to be collaborating with our partners at Working Title on this stellar production, and with Josie as she makes the exciting move from stage to screen work,” said Focus chairman Peter Kujawski. “With two of today’s most vital actresses bringing to life two female titans, Mary, Queen of Scots will be one of the movie events of 2018.”

Here’s the synopsis from the release:

Mary, Queen of Scots explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart. Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth 1. Each young Queen beholds her “sister” in fear and fascination. Rivals in power and in love, and female regents in a masculine world, the two must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence. Determined to rule as much more than a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth’s sovereignty. Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones – and change the course of history.
