Ava DuVernay Set To Direct DC Film’s “The New Gods”

Fresh off the release of this past weekend’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” the film’s director Ava DuVernay is already lining up another big-budget film. Variety is reporting today that DuVernay is set to direct the screen adaptation of “The New Gods” for Warner Bros.

New Gods was created and designed by Jack Kirby in 1971 and published by DC comics and will be part of DC Extended Universe, presumably joining the ranks of Aquaman, set for release later this year, and the sequel of Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman.

In the comics, New Gods are a fictional race from the twin planets of New Genesis and Apokolips. New Genesis is an utopian planet filled with unspoiled forests, mountains, and rivers and is ruled by the Highfather. On the other side is Apokolips, a ruined dystopia ruled by the tyrant and DC Comics supervillain Darkseid.

How the characters of New Gods will fit in to DCEU’s storylines remain to be seen, though one of Darkseid’s most powerful band of warriors Steppenwolf appeared in last November’s Justice League.

DuVernay made history after being the first black woman to direct a $100 million budgeted film, that is of course “A Wrinkle In Time.” Released this weekend, the science fantasy adventure film features an all-star cast including Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Chris Pine. The film grossed $42.2 million this past weekend. DuVernay previously directed Selma, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture in 2015.

Early praise for the show highlights its “shrewd sound design” and “clear and compelling” action. Vulture.com calls it “a bold experiment for Marvel,” and Wired says “sound design has never mattered more” and that the show successfully “manages to place the listener truly within the story…”

THE LIFE OF CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 Variant by Joe Quesada: Your First Look

This July, Margaret Stohl and Carlos Pacheco will come together to bring Carol Danvers a new story in THE LIFE OF CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 – and today, Marvel is excited reveal a new variant cover by our own Joe Quesada.

“Writing Life of Captain Marvel has already been an extraordinary experience, one of those rare times in a writer’s life when the fictional universe you inhabit seems more real than anything else,” said Margaret Stohl. “I’m so grateful to Sana Amanat and Joe Quesada for helping shape it; they are both just huge blazing talents in the writers room. It’s a deeply personal origin story, a family story, an emotional story — somehow both very big, and very small — and the way Carlos draws it has changed the way I think about comics. He breathes as much life into her as any words ever could, probably more. Life and all the things that means to Carol at the moment — regret and resolve and hope.”

“I always knew Joe was an incredible artistic talent, but Life has shown me a new side of him as a creator,” added Stohl. “We truly have joint custody over Carol’s origin story here, and I am so grateful to share her and this journey with him. He has taught me so much about visual storytelling, and heart.”

Kristen Wiig Officially Playing Villain In “Wonder Woman” Sequel

By Creative Media Times

Production of “Wonder Woman” sequel is almost underway and the film has finally found its villain.

Director Patty Jenkins confirmed on her twitter account today the speculations running around fandom throughout the week: Kristen Wiig will be playing Wonder Woman’s iconic DC Comics villain Cheetah.

So excited to confirm the most thrilling news. Yes! It’s true! So incredibly lucky to welcome the sensationally talented Kristen Wiig to our Wonder Woman family. Can’t wait to finally work with one of my favorites. And SO excited by what we have planned. #Cheetah!!! @GalGadot

Meanwhile, the Amazonian princess herself Gal Gadot also expressed excitement about the casting: “This is going to be WONDERful!”

Created by William Moulton Marston, the character has four different incarnations: Priscilla Rich which first appeared in 1943, Deborah Domaine in 1980, Barbara Ann Minerva which debuted in 1987, and most recently Sebastian Ballestreros in 2001. It has not been announced which version Wiig will be playing in the film.

Wonder Woman was a critical and commercial success this past summer, grossing $412 million in the US and $813 million worldwide.

Though not a lot of details about the film has been revealed so far, it is known among fandom that the film will be set in the 1980s during the Cold War and could potentially see the return of Chris Pine. The sequel was officially announced by Warner Bros. at last summer’s San Diego Comicon.

Wonder Woman 2 is scheduled for release in November 2019.

Jeff Lemire Returns To Marvel With SENTR

Featuring the stellar art of Avengers: No Surrender’s Kim Jacinto. This June, The Sentry is returning to the Marvel Universe, along with writer Jeff Lemire (Moon Knight) and Kim Jacinto (Avengers: No Surrender) in an all-new story.

“Having made his dramatic and unexpected return in Donny Cates’ DOCTOR STRANGE story, it was a no-brainer for us to move ahead on an actual SENTRY series! And it was my great fortune that Jeff Lemire was eager to lend his talents to the project, as it will live in the sort of off-kilter headspace that his MOON KNIGHT and Black Hammer projects exist in,” said SVP and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. “And Kim Jacinto, fresh off of AVENGERS: NO SURRENDER is the perfect artist to help visualize the worlds of this shining champion who’s also got a dark underbelly.”

“The Sentry is a fascinating character,” Lemire told Comicbook.com. “I absolutely loved the original Sentry series by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee when it first came out, so I jumped at the chance to write the character. The Sentry has a lot of emotional depth and a lot for me to dig into in terms of the psychology of the character.”

“The Crow” Reboot Set For October 2019 Release

By Creative Media Times

Miramax Films – Dimension Films

Sony Pictures’ remake of “The Crow” starring Jason Momoa (Aquaman) is now set to hit theaters on October 11, 2019. At the moment, this is the same date occupied by Conrad Vernon’s animated film The Addams Family, and two weeks before Wonder Woman sequel storms theaters.

Momoa is set to play Eric Draven, the iconic character played by Brandon Lee in his final film appearance in the 1994 film of “The Crow”.

That film helmed by Alex Proyas is a cult classic, not only due to the tragic on-set incident during production, but for its intense action scenes and visual style that earned comparisons to another cult classic Blade Runner. The Crow was a box office sleeper hit, eventually earning $50 million but the end of it’s theatrical run in the United States, on a modest budget of $23 million.

The announced release date is a step in the positive direction for fans, as remake has been hit with numerous development setbacks and legal battles over the years since the remake was announced in 2008.

Since then, various actors have been attached to play the eponymous protagonist including Bradley Cooper, Channing Tatum and James McAvoy among others.

The film intends to be faithful adaptation of the 1989 comic book series The Crow by James O’Barr, which tells the story of Eric Draven, a rock musician resurrected from the dead by a crow to avenge the death of his girlfriend as well as his own.

The film will be directed by Corin Hardy (The Hallow) and written by Nick Cave.

Marvel Announces THE LIFE OF CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 by Margaret Stohl & Carlos Pacheco

Featuring an all-new story and all-new direction. New series. New directions. New beginnings. It all kicks off this July with THE LIFE OF CAPTAIN MARVEL #1.

“LIFE presents the origins of Carol Danvers and Captain Marvel in one place, and in a way we haven’t seen before,” said SVP and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. “Margie’s pulled together all of the strands of Carol’s backstory to craft a tale that will no doubt become a seminal story about the character, and set her in place for her role in AVENGERS and elsewhere throughout the Marvel Universe.”

“It’s nothing you’ll expect and nothing you’ve seen happen but there will be parts of her life that change the context of what you’ve seen before, so it’s telling the other side of the story, of how she came to be,” Stohl said of Carol’s new story.

“We’re excited to welcome comics veteran Carlos Pacheco to Captain Marvel’s legacy,” added series editor Sarah Brunstad. “Carlos draws powerful, expressive figures with incredible depth—he’s going to show us a different Carol Danvers, one who has to grapple with the choices that have brought her to this new point.”

Featuring an all-new creative team and all-new direction.

New creative teams. New series. New directions. New beginnings. It all kicks off this July with CAPTAIN AMERICA #1!

“I think it’s a really exciting time to be writing Captain America right now,” said Coates. “The country is in an interesting place, and I look forward to inhabiting Steve Rogers’ character – this guy who has been a sort of awkward fit for the world, out of time as people say. I hope fans are excited to see something different, and I think there are some really compelling villains old school Captain America fans and Marvel fans will be familiar with.”

“Finding the right voice to tell the tales of Marvel’s beloved characters is never an easy task, but when it came time to hire the new hand to guide Captain America, we just knew it had to be Ta-Nehisi Coates!” shared Editor-In-Chief C.B. Cebulski. “After re-inventing the Black Panther for the modern era, Ta-Nehisi now brings his sharp scripting sensibilities to Steve Rogers and his new place in the Marvel Universe. With Leinil Yu and Sunny Gho bringing all the incredible action to life in big, bold visuals, you will not be able to put this book down. And our launch is timed perfectly for release on the Fourth of July!”

Fans will be able to read the first Captain America story from Ta-Nehisi Coates and Leinil Yu in the Avengers/Captain America Free Comic Book Day issue, on sale May 5th – and can view the back cover art of the issue by Leinil Yu for the first time now.
